Commercial activities include: fertilizer, fur, lab, meat, novelties, pet, pharmaceuticals, wool, and worm production. The department is responsible for gathering and disseminating information on producers and buyers engaged in all commercial aspects, encouraging humane methods in all commercial operations and developing ideas to assist members with commercial projects, such as pamphlets, posters, ads, coupons, packaging and other related topics.
When “commercial” rabbit ventures are mentioned, the first to come to mind is usually the production of rabbits for meat. Many of these commercial meat facilities raise fryers for marketing directly to a processor. Often, rabbits are transported from the local area to processors in other parts of the country. This is accomplished by transporters (or haulers) covering an established route and run on a regular basis such as every two or three weeks. The ARBA “Market Report” below is a listing of many processors and is frequently updated to provide price and weight requirements. NEW USDA PROCESSING PLANT OPENS IN NORTH CAROLINA The Foothills Pilot Plant/Cool Hand Meats located in Marion, NC processes rabbit under NCDA/FDA jurisdiction that is legal to enter into interstate commerce as permitted by receiving jurisdictions. They will provide a letter, on request, to folks who process with them that explains the regulatory situation of the finished product. The Facility is under continual inspection by an Oklahoma State Meat and Poultry Inspector. Products that are inspected and passed can be marketed in the state of Oklahoma. Producers can consume their own product or market it to the public as retail and/or wholesale sales. The products can be sold to consumers in the State of Oklahoma by face to face sales, farmers markets, home delivery, direct to a retail establishment for example a restaurant, grocery store or any food business. Products purchased in Oklahoma with an Oklahoma State Inspected mark can be transported by the purchaser back to their home state and consumed by the purchaser, their immediate family or non paying guests.
